Bliss Remembered A Novel Frank Deford 9781590206423 Books

This is a light, entertaining novel without a lot of depth. It has a nice twist at the end, which, unfortunately, is predictable 50 pages out. The book is written from the point of view of a son hearing his mother tell part of her life story, so it is almost all dialogue, most of which is phrased in a way that simply does not sound realistic to the reader's ears. In brief, the central character of the story is an Olympic caliber swimmer from the 1930s whose story is told against a real historic background, with several real historic figures for window dressing. But despite the setting, the tale largely fails the test of credibility. I enjoyed it as a quick, amusing read but not for much else. Frank Deford has written better than this.

Bliss Remembered A Novel Frank Deford 9781590206423 Books Reviews

I loved ther closeness of the Mother and Son. I liked the whole story --excellent plot...kept you wanted to read more. I wondered why a Mother would share her life story with a son, not a daughter.....BUT the suspense was there throughout. My book club is discussing this novel tonight.'''' wish I could be there!!
This was one of the most interesting novels I have read in years. It is not about sports. It is about people and their lives. A real page turner with some interesting twists. I liked it so much I have bought it for other members of my family.
I was really disappointed with this book. Mr. Deford is not a very good writer...too many cliches, and the ending was a real letdown. Definitely not worth the price.
BLISS, REMEMBERED is a love story combining the Olympics with the situation in Europe during World War II. The ending is surprising and beautiful! This was the best book I read in 2012!
awkward style in story telling - did not like subject, never put books down, but did
I loved everything about this book. It's one of those books that you never want to end. Immediately upon finishing it, I emailed all of my girlfriends and told them they must read it! Something about the way the story is told....by the woman who lived it to her grown son...it just touched me! And I felt as if I was there, at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and falling in love myself! Truly Blissful!!!
But too easy to figure out the plot twist though not, of course, how he gets there. A few loose ends left unwrapped. Still a fun read.
